Professor Andrew Stokes, new owner of The Old Rectory Cottage, returns from a foreign study visit in time to help wife Rachel organise the village literary festival, based at St Fabian’s church hall. Star attraction is to be famous romantic novelist, Lydia Bray. The success of the weekend’s event is threatened by the arrival of Andrew’s oldest friend, Reivers Fenn, professional gambler, lothario and all-round liability, escaping from an old flame to whom he owes money following a failed racing tip.  The chances of Reivers failing to be an embarrassment recede as not one, but two of the women from his past turn up in the village.
